Designed by Richard Seifert and opened in June 1973, the Park Tower is one of Knightsbridge's most distinctive buildings - a cylindrical tower at 101 Knightsbridge whose circular plan gives each of its 271 rooms a view over the capital. The five star hotel now trades as The Park Tower Knightsbridge, part of Marriott International's Luxury Collection.
As part of the renewal of the building's lower levels, new concrete decks were constructed by Sir Robert McAlpine at ground floor and podium level, requiring waterproofing and insulating before the finished surfaces could be laid.
KEY CHALLENGES
Waterproofing the new concrete decks
Cold Melt@, a cold applied, reinforced liquid waterproofing membrane, was used to waterproof the new concrete decks, forming a seamless, fully bonded finish across each area. Its low odour, flame-free application meant no hot works were required at any stage - a benefit for works at street level in the heart of Knightsbridge.
Insulating and finishing the roof areas
Once the waterproofing was installed, Proteus Pro-Therm XPS Plus insulation was loose laid over the membrane to achieve the U-Value required for the roof areas. These areas were then protected with pedestals and porcelain tiles to form the finished surface, completing the inverted build up.
CONCLUSION
Once the completed works were signed off by Proteus Technical Services, a guarantee was provided for the roof system. Cold Melt@ creates an elastomeric, seamless, cold applied waterproofing membrane which is fully bonded to the substrate, does not become brittle with age, is manufactured in the UK and is BBA certified to last for the design life of the roof it protects.
