    Choosing the right waterproofing system for the right roof

The wrong waterproofing specification can add unnecessary cost, slow down installation and create avoidable problems long before a roof reaches the end of its design life. Yet one of the most common questions facing roofing contractors remains surprisingly simple - should this project use a hot-applied or a cold-applied waterproofing system? The answer is not about which technology is better. It's about selecting the right system for the building, the programme and the conditions on site.

As roofing projects become increasingly complex, the decision is no longer simply about achieving a waterproof roof. Contractors must consider access, health and safety, construction sequencing, detailing, future maintenance and whole-life performance. Increasingly, the waterproofing system needs to work around the project rather than expecting the project to work around the waterproofing.


Both hot-applied and cold-applied systems have evolved significantly over the past decade and each has distinct advantages depending on the nature of the roof. Understanding where each technology performs best can help designers and contractors make more informed specification decisions.
 

When large roof areas demand speed
For expansive new build flat roofs, podium decks and inverted roof systems, Hot Melt® hot-applied waterproofing continues to be one of the most proven solutions available. Its greatest strength lies in large, uninterrupted roof areas where installation teams can work quickly and efficiently. Once applied, the system forms a seamless waterproof membrane protected beneath insulation, paving, ballast or green roof build-ups, making it particularly suitable where durability and long service life are key project requirements. New build commercial offices, apartment developments, hospitals, schools and logistics facilities are often examples where Hot Melt® hot-applied systems are frequently specified because they combine rapid installation with robust long-term performance across extensive roof areas.


Where cold-applied systems offer greater flexibility
However, not every roof is a large open expanse. Modern developments increasingly incorporate terraces, balconies, roof gardens, plant zones, stepped roof levels and numerous service penetrations. These features create a level of complexity that often changes the specification conversation. Cold-applied waterproofing systems have become increasingly popular on these projects because they eliminate the need for heated materials or naked flames while offering exceptional flexibility around complex detailing. Restricted access, occupied buildings and projects where hot works permits present logistical challenges can all make cold-applied systems an attractive alternative. Their ability to accommodate awkward junctions, rooflights, upstands and service penetrations also makes them particularly well suited to highly detailed roof designs.


Construction programmes matter too
That said, specification decisions are rarely driven by roof geometry alone. Construction programmes frequently influence the choice of waterproofing system, particularly where concrete curing periods, changing trade sequences or restricted site access place pressure on the critical path. Some modern cold-applied systems such as Proteus Cold Melt® can be installed onto green concrete far earlier than many traditional waterproofing solutions, allowing roofing work to commence sooner and reducing the risk of programme delays.  Where speed to weathertightness is critical, this can become a significant advantage.
 

There is not a single right answer
One of the biggest misconceptions within roofing is that hot-applied and cold-applied waterproofing systems are competing technologies. In reality, they are complementary solutions. Large podium decks may naturally lend themselves to Hot Melt® hot-applied waterproofing, while balconies, difficult access areas or complex detailing may be better suited to cold-applied membranes. Increasingly, both technologies are being used on the same project, with each selected for the area where it performs best.

Answering these questions will usually identify the most appropriate waterproofing solution long before individual products are considered.
The most successful roofing contractors understand that waterproofing is about matching technology to the project. Hot-applied Hot Melt® systems continue to offer outstanding performance across large protected roof areas, while modern cold-applied technologies provide valuable flexibility where access, detailing or programme constraints make traditional installation methods more difficult.
The result is not a choice between one system and another, but a better-informed specification that delivers the right waterproofing solution for every part of the roof.
