+44 (0)1268 777871As part of a major redevelopment programme at West Cumberland Hospital – encompassing upgrades to internal ward blocks and improvements to the building envelope – the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust identified long-standing issues with the existing roofing systems. Persistent water ingress had caused significant deterioration to the fabric of several critical areas, making roof replacement a priority within the wider scheme.
Survey & Technical Assessment
Proteus was commissioned by the Trust to undertake a comprehensive roof survey and provide a detailed condition report. Each roof area was analysed individually, with tailored solutions offered to address both immediate defects and long-term performance requirements.
Working collaboratively with the project architects, Proteus provided technical guidance, design details, and specialist support to facilitate the integration of new rooftop services, including air handling units, ducting, and smoke dampers. These elements were incorporated seamlessly into the overall waterproofing strategy.
Identified Issues & Proposed Solution
Investigations revealed that the existing roofing system was saturated throughout, leaving full removal as the only viable remediation option. All roofing materials were stripped back to the original concrete structure, allowing for a complete redesign of the insulation and drainage system. A new cut-to-falls insulation scheme was installed to ensure effective water management across the roof areas while bringing the building up to current regulatory standards. This upgrade not only resolved historical drainage issues but also improved the thermal performance of the hospital’s envelope.
Waterproofing System Installation
The roofing works were completed using the Proteus Ultima-Plus range of high-performance felt membranes. This system was selected for its robustness, adaptability, and ability to provide a comprehensive long-term guarantee – offering the Trust confidence in the durability and reliability of the new installation for years to come.
Project Delivery
Proteus’ technical team helped to ensure seamless coordination and adherence to the highest levels of workmanship. Despite challenging winter coastal weather conditions, the project was delivered to a high standard, maintaining programme requirements and ensuring the hospital remained fully operational and protected during the works.
