At the University of Sussex in Brighton, the asphalt roof of the listed Shawcross Building had started to fail due to detailing around the concrete parapet.
The university needed to find a long-term, cost effective and easy to apply waterproofing solution which would ensure the roof of the engineering and applied sciences building would not further deteriorate. A tapered insulation scheme was added to meet current standards and needed to be well designed to ensure all water is removed from the roof using the existing outlet positions. As the most suitable solution to extend the lifespan of the roof while keeping costs to a minimum, LBL Surveyors Ltd. working for Sussex University Estates specified Proteus Pro-Cold® Built up Roof system.
Key Requirements: Health and Safety
When working on occupied buildings, especially in crowded towns and cities, safety is of paramount importance. Using Proteus liquid applied systems minimised the risk of fire because they are cold installed and therefore remove the risks posed by heat or open roof torch flames, consequently protecting operatives, building occupants and members of the public.
Quality Control
Proteus Waterproofing and the licensed contractor worked in close partnership to successfully deliver the project to a very high standard and provide the client with a long lasting solution. Proteus Technical Managers made regular inspections, reporting on progress, ensuring the installation of Proteus Pro-Cold® met the required standards. Proteus Pro-Cold® built-up roof system incorporated Pro-Vapour Control/ Carrier Membrane SA and adhered Proteus Pro-Therm insulation. As a reinforced, cold applied system, it provided a fast, high-quality seamless roofing solution which provides durability in excess of 30 years under normal service conditions.
Long-term Performance and Durability
Proteus Pro-Cold® waterproofing system offers 10, 15, 20 and 25-year durability options which are available with independently provided insurance. It is part of a range of Proteus system solutions which also include inverted roofs, green roofs and podium decks. Proteus Pro-Cold® does not have any joints and minimal maintenance is now required on the roofs.
