New build terrace roof – Zip World, Bangor

Zip World at Penrhyn Quarry, close to Snowdonia National Park, required an easy to install roofing system, which would provide proven and long-term protection against severe weather conditions as part of the new visitor experience centre.

Product brief:

Applied by Proteus Waterproofing’s licensed contractor, Cold Melt® a seamless waterproofing system was selected to protect the roof terrace of 350m². This provided a fast and efficient installation so that work could be carried out below.

Key Requirements: High Performance Waterproofing

This new build project was constructed with a concrete deck, however due to the time of year and weather conditions the concrete had not had a chance to dry out, which would normally prevent a waterproof system being installed. This problem was overcome by first applying Proteus Waterproofing’s Cold Melt® DPM Primer to the deck, which can be installed over 99% saturated concrete and once cured forms a barrier to moisture, meaning Proteus Waterproofing’s Cold Melt® waterproofing system could be installed. TheCold Melt® system comprises Pro-Carrier SA directly to the Cold Melt® DPM Primer with Cold Melt® Resin on top. Once this was installed it ensured the building was immediately watertight. This was essential as the winter weather closed in on the property preventing the application of the Cold Melt® resin membrane. The roofing contractor was able to pull off site until the weather improved.

This allowed the main contractor to continue working inside the property, in the dry, allowing the build programme to continue as the roof was now protected and watertight. When the weather improved the licensed contractor was able to continue the system, applying the Cold Melt® Resin, Proteus Pro-Therm XPS insulation and concrete paver finishes.

Key Requirements: Quality Control

Proteus Waterproofing worked in close partnership with the licensed contractor to successfully deliver the project to a very high standard, including technical manager inspections throughout the project. The inverted roof system incorporated Pro Carrier SA, Pro Prime® SA, Proteus Pro-Therm XPS insulation, Cold Melt® DPM Primer, Cold Melt® Resin. Finally Cold Melt® UV Top Coat, was also applied to any exposed areas, to protect from sunlight.

Key Requirements: Seamless Waterproofing

Incorporating recycled rubber crumb and organically grown products, Cold Melt® creates an elastomeric, seamless, cold applied waterproofing membrane. The Cold Melt® system can include inverted roof insulation and, with or without insulation, can be designed as a paved, ballasted, green or brown roof. The membrane does not become brittle with age, and is BBA Certified to last the life of the building. Cold Melt® exhibits no odour offering numerous benefits for both the installer and client.
