Classrooms remained unused due to damp and mould growth which was affecting the day to day running of the school. Proteus Waterproofing® were approached to provide a long-term waterproofing solution which would allow the school to run with a full capacity of classrooms.
Key Challenges & Solutions
• Challenging Roof Design: The existing roof structure was a horseshoe design with a gutter running around the inside edge. The insulation scheme was tapered to encourage the water to fall into the centre. A vapour control layer was also used to prevent moisture from passing through to the building’s structure.
• Complex Details: Due to the Victorian construction, there were adjacent walls with low cill details and pitched slate roofs finishing close to the flat roof. Thinner insulation boards were used to abut these areas allowing for adequate heights from the top of the board to the underside of the tiles and cills. Perimeter upstands were low in height, so these had to be raised to allow for the height of the tapered insulation design. The upstands were then finished with new fascia boards and a GRP edge trim. Conclusion
The roof was fully stripped back to the original concrete deck and a new build up insulated felt system installed to conform to current regulations.
