Located in Cumbria, Millom Infant School was experiencing problems with an ageing roof.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Classrooms remained unused due to damp and mould growth, affecting the day to day running of the school. Proteus Waterproofing was approached to provide a waterproofing solution that would allow the school to run with a full capacity of classrooms once again.
KEY CHALLENGES
A horseshoe roof draining to its centre
The existing roof structure was a horseshoe design with a gutter running around its inside edge. The Proteus Pro-Therm insulation scheme was tapered to encourage water to fall towards the centre, with a vapour control layer installed to prevent moisture passing through into the building's structure.
Working within Victorian details
The school's Victorian construction meant adjacent walls with low cill details and pitched slate roofs finishing close to the flat roof. Thinner insulation boards were used to abut these areas, allowing adequate heights from the top of the board to the underside of the tiles and cills. The perimeter upstands were low in height, so these were raised to suit the tapered insulation design and finished with new fascia boards and a GRP edge trim.
CONCLUSION
The roof was fully stripped back to the original concrete deck and a new insulated Proteus Pro-Felt@ built up system installed, bringing the roof in line with the current Building Regulations. A 25 year Proteus guarantee was issued to the client to support the completed system - and, with the damp resolved, the school's classrooms back in use.
