Longford Park Primary School consists of a number of separate flat roofs making up circa 2,500 m2, originally built with a metal deck, a polythene vapour control layer, PIR flat board insulation and a PVC single-ply waterproofing.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
From day one, the roofs had leaked due to mechanical damage to the single-ply caused by maintenance traffic and bird damage. Proteus Waterproofing was asked to provide a 30 year system applied directly over the existing roofs, keeping them protected from the weather throughout.
KEY CHALLENGES
Leaks from day one
With the damaged single-ply still in place, the necessary repairs were first carried out to the existing membrane, making the substrate ready to receive the new system. The Proteus Pro-Cold® waterproofing membrane - a polyurethane, fully reinforced, cold applied, elastomeric liquid - was then installed directly over the retained covering, meaning the roofs were never opened up to the weather during the works.
Term time works above a full school
With pupils in lessons below throughout, noise had to be kept to a minimum. As Proteus Pro-Cold® was cold applied as a liquid, no hot works were required at any stage and the low noise installation limited the impact of the works on the school day.
CONCLUSION
Proteus Pro-Cold® is supported by a British Board of Agrement certificate stating a minimum service life of 30 years, which allowed Proteus Waterproofing to provide a 30 year guarantee to support the finished system. Once cured, the
membrane forms a seamless, fully adhered, elastomeric finish which does not become brittle with age, is UK manufactured and BBA certified -protecting the school's roofs for the decades ahead.
