Heathrow is the busiest airport in Europe, and behind its terminals sits an estate of operational buildings that keep the airport running. Proteus Waterproofing already protects a number of roofs across Heathrow, and as part of this ongoing programme, Building 16265 required attention to its pitched metal roof, where the sheets were showing cut-edge corrosion.

KEY CHALLENGES
Halting corrosion at the cut edges

Where profiled metal sheets are cut and lapped, the protective coating stops at the cut edge, leaving the steel exposed. Corrosion starting there can creep back beneath the coating and along the laps, leading to leaks and eventually sheet replacement. The corroded edges were wire brushed to remove the rust, Pro-Joint Tape installed across the affected edges and laps, and Proteus Pro-Cold® applied over the top to seal and protect them - following the profile of the sheets and curing to a seamless finish across each repair.

Coordinating works on a live airport building

The building remained occupied and operational throughout, within the security-controlled environment of the airport. Roof access was restricted and the works had to be coordinated closely with those below. As Proteus Pro-Cold® was cold applied, no hot works were required at any stage - an important consideration within the airport perimeter - whilst the single pack liquid required no mixing on site and its low odour limited the impact on occupants.

CONCLUSION
By treating the cut edges in place, the roof sheets were protected without the cost or disruption of replacing them, extending the service life of the existing roof. Once cured, Proteus Pro-Cold@ forms a seamless, fully adhered, elastomeric membrane with UV stability. It is UK manufactured and BBA certified - supporting the issue of a guarantee, and adding Building 16265 to the roofs Proteus Waterproofing protects across Heathrow Airport.
