Located in the centre of Bristol and home to one of Britain’s largest theatre stages, Bristol Hippodrome is a hub for many major musical productions. The existing roof plant and ventilation equipment required replacement, which meant the roof also needed a new waterproofing system.
Proteus Waterproofing® was approached to provide continued support and technical expertise throughout the project. Our technical team carried out regular site visits to ensure the installation progressed smoothly at each key stage.
Key Challenges & Solutions
Plant Details
Some terminations could only be completed once the new plant and ventilation equipment, installed by others was in place. Once accessible, these details were finalised, and guidance was provided to ensure all steel posts, pipes, and upstands were terminated correctly and securely.
Co‑ordinating Trades
Due to the main contractor’s tight programme, several other trades were brought onto the roof before the waterproofing works could be fully protected. This resulted in unavoidable damage caused by other trades. Once identified, Proteus and Central Roofing worked collaboratively to assess the affected areas, and jointly agreeing to temporarily raise equipment and reinstate the membrane to the affected areas.
Planning
To maintain installation quality amid the busy site schedule, works were briefly paused. This ensured the Proteus Pro-Cold® system could be installed without further disruption and continued to comply with the project specification.
Overlaying
On areas requiring additional layers of Proteus Pro-Cold® beyond a 7‑day period, the existing surface was reactivated to ensure full adhesion of subsequent layers and maintain long-term system integrity.
Conclusion
Proteus worked closely with approved contractor Central Roofing and Building Services Ltd to navigate the logistical challenges created by the wider project programme. Through collaborative planning, technical support, and joint problem‑solving, the project was delivered to a high standard. The Proteus Pro-Cold® system now provides a seamless, reliable solution, ensuring long-term protection to the entire roof area.
